Bee Bot Communities

Unit Summary

Students will combine their math unit (measuring), social studies unit (communities) with their robotics unit (Bee Bots) to create a city where the Bee Bot can be programmed to drive through visiting different community buildings.  The students will also be introduced to mapping skills such as creating a map from a bird's-eye view with a 1:6 ratio.

Essential Questions

  • Students will understand the meaning of a community and achieve an understanding of the importance of people, buildings, and contributions made by the community members to the community.
  • Students will understand what a map is and how to create a scale map (1 to 6) to match their community.
  • Students will explore via trial and error in coding the non-screen programable robot Bee Bot through their community.​

The student will know...
  • A community is a place where people interact with one another in many ways and depend on one another.​
  • ​How to skip count by 6 as well as how to draw a map using 1:6 ratio.
  • How to use critical thinking skills to program their Bee Bot to move through the community with each forward movement being 6 inches.
The student will be able to...
  • Understand there are many needs to a community and many individuals contribute in some way to meet those needs.
  • Understand how to use a tape measure to create a map with 1 inch blocks that correlates to their community in which each block is 6 inches.
  • Understand how to read a map in order to program their Bee Bot robot through their community.
