Grade 1
Robotics (Resource: Lego WeDo 2.0)

Unit Summary

Students will program robots to perform specific tasks.

Programming these robots to perform specific behaviors helps students become active, systematic and collaborative learners. They will learn to utilize logical reasoning to solve problems, and learn to explore, combine, and execute ideas as a collaborative unit.

Each project will involve the development of an objective, building and programming the robot, testing the robot, and modifying it to execute the objective. The students will take on the role of robotic engineers.

Enduring Understandings

Essential Questions

Students will understand that:
  • Robotics is a crucial component to numerous industries including the disability industry.
  • Robotics involves, creativity, collaboration, motivation, improvisation, self-direction, and discovery.
  • Robotics is interdisciplinary (STEM).
  • The process of creating robots involve design, construction, operation, and application.
  • How do we, as a team of robotic engineers, program a robot to  perform specific tasks to help people who have physical disabilities?
  • Where do you find science, technology, engineering or mathematics in robotics?
  • What qualities do effective robots have?
  • How can robots be used to benefit our community and the world?

Knowledge

Skills

The student will know...
  • The hardware of the robot that they create (computer, motors, and sensors).
  • The process of designing a robot (development of an objective, building and programming the robot, testing, and modifying).
  • Specific applications of robots in the real world.
The student will be able to...
  • Program their robot using a block-based programming language to move straight, back, curved, and spin around.
  • Utilize the color, gyro, and ultrasonic sensors to complete tasks.
  • Identify and define a problem, plan activities to solve the problem, make informed decisions, and use multiple processes to find solutions.
  • Interact, collaborate, and publish with classmates to present a product they produced together.
