Unit 1: Modes of Transportation (2 weeks)

Unit Summary

Students will learn about then build different modes of transportation.  Students will develop their fine motor and problem-solving skills while simultaneously unleashing their creativity as they construct classic machines.

Enduring Understandings

Essential Questions

Students will understand that:
  • We use transportation to get to from one place to another.
  • We use different types of transportation for different reasons. 
  • Vehicles move in different ways. 
  • Some vehicles are operated by community helpers like bus drivers, conductors, firefighters, police officers and mail carriers. 
  • How do we and our community use various modes of transportation? ​
  • What kinds of transportation do I use and why?
  • How are various modes of transportation similar and different?
  • Who operates the vehicles in my community?

Skills 

The student will know...
  • The modes of transportation used to move people, products, and ideas from place to place, their importance, and their advantages and disadvantages.
  • The type of vehicle to the place where each operates or the operator of the vehicle.
The student will be able to...
  • Identify words and constructs meaning from text, illustrations, graphics, and charts using the strategies of phonics, word structure, and context clues.
  • Invent a transportation vehicle to solve the problem.
