Kindergarten
Unit 5: Non-Screen Coding

Unit Summary

Students will learn about basic programming concepts (functions, pattern recognition, variables, and debugging) that are crucial in any programming language. Learning programming will help students make sense of the computerized world they live in. It will also develop their critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making skills. Students will be required to identify problems and develop solutions to complete tasks.

Enduring Understandings

Essential Questions

Students will understand that:
  • There are numerous programming languages that programmers can choose from.
  • The action of "writing" computer programs can involve: conditional statements like "If this, then that," loops that repeat commands, functions that execute sets of commands and debugging any errors in your “code.”
  • What devices do you use in your everyday life requires programming?
  • What problems can you solve by programming? What can you create?
  • How are sequencing and conditional statements beneficial in coding?
  • Why are functions important to programming?

Knowledge

Skills

The student will know...
  • Programming is the process of instructing a computer how to do a task.
  • That programming basics involves: conditional statements like "If this, then that." loops that repeat commands, functions that execute sets of commands, these programming basics create shorter lines of code and debugging any errors in your “code” requires critical thinking.
The student will be able to...
  • Move from one location to another in sequential steps (order of events).
  • Use loops, functions, and conditional statements to make shorter lines of code that perform powerful operations.
  • Debug errors in lines of code.
  • Use critical thinking to identify and prevent bugs.
